A few reminders:
PE - PE days will be Monday and Tuesday this half term. Children should come to school dressed in their school PE kit on these days.
Water - It is important that children bring in a bottle of water, not juice, each day which they can access at any time and refill throughout the day.
Snacks - Children are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to eat at breaktime - no chocolate, crisps or sweets. We are a nut free school. Snack can also be purchased from the school kitchen using credit on your child’s dinner money account.
Autumn 2

Writing
We will be using 'The Lost Happy Endings' by Carol Ann Duffy to support our writing this half term. This is a fantastic and magical tale about what happens when, one night, a wicked witch steals the happy endings to bedtime stories. It is up to Jub, the keeper of the happy endings, to save the day and ensure sweet dreams everywhere. Our final writing outcome will be our own fairy tale narrative.
Reading
We will be evaluating authors' language choice, identifying themes and conventions and summarising ideas using the text 'Hansel and Gretel' by Neil Gaiman.
Maths
This half term we will be working through multiplication and division, identifying multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers. We will then be moving onto fractions, building on from learning in Year 4, comparing, ordering, adding, subtracting and converting fractions and mixed numbers.
Autumn 1
Writing
We will be using 'Young, Gifted and Black' by Jamia Wilson and 'Race to the Frozen North' by Catherine Johnson to support our writing this term. Both of these books tell the wonderful stories of black heroes, celebrating their inspirational achievements. Our final writing outcome will be a series of diary entries about the significant events in Matthew Henson's life.
Reading
We will be focusing on our inference and comparison skills using the text 'Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls' by Eleni Favilli and Francesca Cavallo.
Maths
We will begin the Year 5 Maths curriculum by working on place value, securing our knowledge of numbers up to 1,000,000, including reading, writing, ordering, comparing and rounding.
We will then move onto addition and subtraction, adding and subtracting numbers with more than 4 digits using the formal written methods and then solving multi-step problems.
