This half term, we will be basing our writing on 'Arthur and the Golden Rope' by Joe Todd-Stanton. This fantasy narrative follows Arthur as he ventures through magical woods collecting magical items until one day he stumbles across a terrifying beast that is destroying the city and its people. What will Arthur do? We will be writing our own fantasy narrative as our final outcome.

Focusing on our inference and comparison skills, we will be reading 'Odd and the Frost Giants' by Neil Gaiman as our text this half term.

We begin the half term with multiplication and division where we will be multiplying 4 digit numbers by 1 or 2 digit and then dividing 4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers using the formal written method of short division.

We will then revisit fractions, learning to multiple fractions and mixed numbers by integers and calculating fractions of a quantity.

Autumn 2

Please click here to see the Autumn overview for more information.

We will be using 'The Lost Happy Endings' by Carol Ann Duffy to support our writing this half term. This is a fantastic and magical tale about what happens when, one night, a wicked witch steals the happy endings to bedtime stories. It is up to Jub, the keeper of the happy endings, to save the day and ensure sweet dreams everywhere. Our final writing outcome will be our own fairy tale narrative.

We will be evaluating authors' language choice, identifying themes and conventions and summarising ideas using the text 'Hansel and Gretel' by Neil Gaiman.

This half term we will be working through multiplication and division, identifying multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers. We will then be moving onto fractions, building on from learning in Year 4, comparing, ordering, adding, subtracting and converting fractions and mixed numbers.

Autumn 1

We will be using 'Young, Gifted and Black' by Jamia Wilson and 'Race to the Frozen North' by Catherine Johnson to support our writing this term. Both of these books tell the wonderful stories of black heroes, celebrating their inspirational achievements. Our final writing outcome will be a series of diary entries about the significant events in Matthew Henson's life.

We will be focusing on our inference and comparison skills using the text 'Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls' by Eleni Favilli and Francesca Cavallo.

We will begin the Year 5 Maths curriculum by working on place value, securing our knowledge of numbers up to 1,000,000, including reading, writing, ordering, comparing and rounding.

We will then move onto addition and subtraction, adding and subtracting numbers with more than 4 digits using the formal written methods and then solving multi-step problems.
